Monique Jansen photography

My works explore the intersection of memory, landscape, and materiality through the medium of encaustic painting. I use molten wax, pigment, and heat to build layered, abstract landscapes that evoke rather than depict the natural world.

Texture is central to my process and expression. Each piece is built slowly—layer upon layer—through scraping, fusing, and reworking, creating a tactile history within the painting itself.

I am inspired by the beauty surrounding me. When living in The Netherlands my work was inspired by the ever-present rain: its rhythms, its reflective surfaces, and the way it transforms the world into something both familiar and elusive.

Once I moved to the Okanagan I couldn’t help but be stunned by the amazing nature. So in the last few years my paintings have gradually become abstractions of the landscape. With that, my colour palette changed from the dark greys and blues in The Netherlands to the sunny, brighter colours of the Okanagan.

I teach at the Vernon Art Centre and I exhibit regularly.
